Hi Tom, A very newsy blog again - good to hear from you and enlightening. Your point on 100 people being killed in the last month in fighting over a territorial dispute puts things in perspective. The fact that there is such a dispute at all never registers in the media here. And yet a few people being killed in and incident in a "more developed" country will all over the papers and TV. Just shows you how narrow the news coverage we see is! Best Wishes QT
After a career in life assurance for longer than I care to admit I decided to do some work in developing countries. I tried to reeducate myself by studying international relations and then I signed up as a VSO volunteer. From March 2008 to March 2011 I worked as an Institutional Development Advisor to the Maga local council. Maga is a remote, poor and underdeveloped sub-division of the Far North region of Cameroon with a population of around 85,000. Life is very hard in Maga, the needs of its council and its people are enormous and I found many opportunities to add value. My three years there were the most fulfilling of my working life. If interested in supporting the people of Maga send an email to communedemaga@gmail.com. The opinions expressed in my blog are entirely my own and have not been vetted by VSO. Enjoy, Tom.
